Mission and Values

Our Values

Reproductive Justice is the human right to control our bodies, our sexuality, our gender, our work and our reproduction. That right can only be achieved when all women and girls have the complete economic, social, and political power and resources to make healthy decisions about our bodies, our families, and our communities in all areas of our lives. It is this vision that propels this new initiative.

At the core of Reproductive Justice is the belief that all women have 1) the right to have children, 2) the right to not have children, and 3) the right to nurture the children we have in a safe and healthy environment. This is our vision for this innovative initiative.

Our Mission

In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda is national organizational initiative designed to amplify and lift up the voices of Black women at the national and regional levels in our ongoing fight to secure Reproductive Justice for all women and girls.

Initially, In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda will focus on abortion rights and access, contraceptive equity, and comprehensive sex education as our key policy issues. As a Reproductive Justice entity, we will approach these issues from a human rights perspective, incorporating the intersections of race, gender, class, sexual orientation and gender identity with the situational impacts of economics, politics and culture that make up the lived experiences of Black women in America.

The major goals of the initiative are:

  1. To establish a leadership voice for Black women on reproductive rights, health and justice policy at the national level;
  2. To build a coordinated grassroots movement of Black women in support of abortion rights and access, including ending the onerous funding restrictions, contraceptive equity and comprehensive sex education;
  3. To lay the foundation for ongoing policy change at the national and state levels that impacts the lives and well being of Black women and their families; and
  4. To engage and motivate Black women as a traditionally underrepresented group to use their voting power in the American electorate.

In Our Own Voice presents a unique opportunity to mount a coordinated campaign that asserts the reproductive rights of Black women. The initiative provides an avenue for Black women’s Reproductive Justice organizations and activists to amplify the work we do at the state and regional levels to advance reproductive health, rights and justice, including working to ensure safe and legal abortions. The initiative will also demonstrate the relevance and power of these voices at the national level as Black women across the
The initiative will also demonstrate the relevance and power of these voices at the national level as Black women across the country speak in one voice, coordinated across all ages, education levels and geographic regions, in support of their reproductive rights.
