Economic Issues and Reproductive Autonomy Among Top Voter Concerns for Black Families in the 2024 Election and Beyond
Black women are a decisive force in elections, yet very little survey research exists reflecting our needs, values, and perspectives. Most public opinion polls lack large numbers of participants from Black communities, which prevents breaking down the results by race and gender. In Our Own Voice’s Lives and Voices of Black Families in 2024 surveyed 1,005 Black adults during January 2004 about their views during the 2024 election cycle with a special focus on key policy shifts and inflection points in who holds political decision-making power. Conducted since 2012, our national polls are the first and only of its kind and one of the most trusted resources in demanding action on advancing Reproductive Justice.
2022
In May 2022, In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda commissioned Perry Undem to conduct the “Views Toward the Voting in 2022 among Black Women” survey among Black female registered voters nationally and in seven states (FL, GA, LA, OH, PA, TN, TX) on the topic of voting in the midterm elections.
In September 2022, In Our Own Voice asked pollsters to go back into the field – after the school shooting in Uvalde, TX and the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade – and conduct additional interviews in the seven states to see where abortion, women’s rights, and gun violence/shootings stood on Black women’s issue priorities. Results show that abortion rights became a higher voting priority across nearly all states. More voters included abortion in their “top 5” issues post-Roe. Black women are more likely (post-Roe) to vote for candidates who support abortion rights and access.
