Black Women’s Health Imperative

The Black Women’s Health Imperative (Imperative) is the only organization devoted solely to advancing the health and wellness of America’s 20 million Black women and girls through advocacy and public policy, health education, research and leadership development.

Founded as the National Black Women’s Health Project in 1983 by health activist and McArthur genius Byllye Y. Avery, the Imperative works to advance health equity and social justice for Black women across the lifespan.

The Imperative strives to eliminate racial and gender-based health inequities and deepen Black women’s resolve in becoming informed decision makers to achieve optimum health and wellness. The Imperative works through:

  • Advocacy and Public Policy – We focus on actionable steps for eliminating the undue health burdens Black women face.
  • Health Education – Our education initiatives provide Black women with the tools and resources that help them become informed and empowered health care consumers and caregivers.
  • Research – The Imperative strives to be widely recognized and highly regarded as the credible information source on all issues related to Black women’s health.
  • Leadership Development – Our training and leadership programs are designed to enhance the competencies and skills of Black women and organizations who work together to champion our causes of health equity, quality healthcare and reproductive justice for all.
