Re-Imagining Policy: In Pursuit of Black Reproductive Justice
In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda presents the 2023 Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda
“Reproductive Justice (RJ) is the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.”
More than 50 Black women’s organizations and advocates offer proactive Reproductive Justice policy solutions
In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, Interfaith Voices for Reproductive Justice, and SisterLove, Inc. present the 2023 Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda, an innovative, proactive policy agenda created in collaboration with more than 50 Black women’s organizations and Reproductive Justice activists. The agenda offers strategic policy solutions to address issues at the intersections of race, gender, class, sexual orientation and gender identity—within the situational impacts of economics, politics and culture—that make up the lived experiences of Black women, girls and gender-expansive individuals in the United States.
Our work is far from over. We continue to call on policymakers to reimagine policy, with the communities most impacted right at the center, in pursuit of Black Reproductive justice. Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people are often the backbone of our families, our movements, our economy, our democracy. At the very same time, we face perpetual attacks on our civil and human rights—coupled with the rise of maternal mortality and state-sanctioned violence—and attempts to restrict our freedom.
The 2023 Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda promotes a collective framework grounded in human rights and Black feminist theory; and continues to be a guidepost for effective policy in this country. The change we envision needs to be boldly reimagined. It addresses the right to health care, dignified birth, and access to abortion; equity in housing and education; fair employment and clean water; and the full range of social, economic, political, and cultural supports needed for Black women and families to thrive.
