Susie King Taylor

Born into slavery, Susie King Taylor attended two secret schools taught by Black women and learned how to read, using her education to empower the next generation. She was the first African-American to publicly teach formerly enslaved children and adults in Georgia. She was also the only Black woman to publish a memoir of her experiences during the Civil War.
