Constance Baker Motley

Constance Baker Motley was the first Black woman appointed to the federal judiciary, first woman Borough President of Manhattan in New York City, and first Black woman in the New York State Senate. Early in her career, she was an assistant attorney to the famed Thurgood Marshall and worked on the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education, as the first Black woman to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court. Learn more about her legacy.
