Decisions About Emergency Care Should Not Be in the Hands of Judges

Today, a leaked Supreme Court document indicated that the Court is likely to dismiss Idaho and Moyle, et al. v. United States and allow abortions in medical emergencies to proceed in Idaho. In response, Dr. Regina Davis Moss, President and CEO of In Our Own Voice, released the following statement:

“While this leak is not the final decision, if it holds, we are glad emergency abortion care remains protected for now. But we’re far from comforted or satisfied. With this case likely to return to the lower courts, pregnant people, especially Black women, will continue to have to live in fear of not being able to receive the essential medical care they may need. Healthcare providers have already had to deny or delay abortion care out of fear of legal consequences. This case represents yet another attack on our reproductive autonomy and should have never gone this far. While it’s a sigh of relief for now, we should never have to hold our breath for any court to decide our reproductive health and futures.

“Our futures are in our own hands. Black women’s reproductive autonomy should never be left to the decisions of a few. Voting is still the most powerful thing we can do to protect our rights to essential healthcare and achieve full Reproductive Justice.”
