In Our Own Voice Statement on the Preventable Death of Candi Miller

NATIONWIDE — Following the news of Amber Nicole Thurman, today ProPublica reported on the death of Candi Miller, a second Black woman who was also killed as a result of Georgia’s six-week abortion ban. In response, Dr. Regina Davis Moss, President and CEO of In Our Own Voice, released the following statement:

“What happened to Candi Miller is another direct result of Georgia’s dangerous abortion ban. Miller did not seek the abortion care she needed out of fear of being criminalized. Lawmakers in Georgia robbed Candi Miller of the ability to get an abortion at a clinic or hospital in her home state. Her children found their mother unresponsive in her bed because states like Georgia have not only restricted access to abortion, but turned it into a crime.

Abortion is healthcare. Both Candi Miller and Amber Nicole Thurman should be alive today. Let’s be clear: Georgia’s lawmakers and the Supreme Court have blood on their hands, and now three Black children will grow up without their mothers. Their deaths, and those of countless other stories we have yet to learn about, were preventable.

ProPublica’s investigation underscores what Reproductive Justice advocates have always feared: Black women will pay the price of these harmful policies with our lives. The only path forward is to elect leaders who will restore and expand abortion access and the comprehensive Reproductive Justice policies we fight for every day.”
