Today APHA Press announced the release of Black Women’s Reproductive Health and Sexuality: A Holistic Public Health Approach from In Our Own Voice President and CEO Regina Davis Moss, PhD, MPH. The book brings together the intersectional perspectives of researchers, health providers, community leaders and other advocates engaged with Black women’s reproductive and sexual health to identify and disrupt the systemic injustices, assumptions and stereotypes that continue to prevent them from getting the quality health care and other support they need to live healthy lives. At a time when Black women are facing severe rates of maternal mortality and chronic health conditions, Black Women’s Reproductive Health and Sexuality moves beyond evaluating health disparities and negative outcomes and calls for fundamentally transforming the way that health professionals and policymakers approach Black women’s health.
“This book is a culmination of a lifelong journey to provide true understanding of the underlying factors that influence a Black woman’s ability to realize her full reproductive and sexual self in a way that centers the experiences and voices of Black women,” said Regina Davis Moss. “Black Women’s Reproductive Health and Sexuality is an important step toward critically examining the multi-faceted systems driving Black women’s health outcomes, and a reminder that we cannot ignore any aspect of our health and well-being. Ultimately it is up to us to create the changes we need, and we have the power to make our holistic vision of Black women’s health and well-being a reality.”
In Our Own Voice is committed to advancing the holistic solutions needed to support Black women’s health. This mission is reflected through initiatives including advocating for comprehensive implementation of the Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda at the federal and state levels and organizing voters across the country via the I Am a Reproductive Justice Voter campaign.
